As a doctor, it is important that my patients take the medication I have prescribed. Many reasons why patients don’t take their medication are caused by misconceptions, confusion, or other factors that can be easily fixed. It is often not the patients fault.

Why are patients refusing to take their medication?

Cost. Cost. Some patients cannot afford it. Although the doctor might send the prescription believing it to be the best for the patient, the patient arrives at the pharmacy to find out that the cost is beyond their means. It is often because the medication isn’t covered by their insurance, and they have to pay the full cost. Sometimes, the patient is embarrassed enough to not call their doctor and tell them so they do without. There are many options. The doctor’s job is to make sure that the patient understands the reason for a particular treatment. The doctor cannot treat a patient if he or she leaves the exam room unassisted.

Myths. There are many myths. We’ve all seen the lawyer ads that say to call them if you take a certain medication. Side effects are a part of every medication. Side effects must be balanced against the potential benefits that the medication might offer. This discussion should take place between the doctor and the patient, and the decision should be made in light of the potential risks. Sometimes, side effects or hearing about them can cause a patient to stop taking the medication. The doctor may not be aware of it until several weeks later.
