Why patients won’t take their medication

Many times, I see patients to check on them and find that they aren’t taking the prescribed medications. Sometimes, the reason is obvious. Other times, the patient is unwilling to share the information. Patients can choose to take or not take the medication prescribed. Sometimes, however, patients can put their health at risk by refusing to take prescribed medication. Canada Drugs Direct is an online pharmacy that offers delivery via mail. We will help you locate the right medicine for you, and we will deliver it as fast and efficiently as is possible.

As a doctor, it is important that my patients take the medication I have prescribed. Many reasons why patients don’t take their medication are caused by misconceptions, confusion, or other factors that can be easily fixed. It is often not the patients fault.

Why are patients refusing to take their medication?

Cost. Cost. Some patients cannot afford it. Although the doctor might send the prescription believing it to be the best for the patient, the patient arrives at the pharmacy to find out that the cost is beyond their means. It is often because the medication isn’t covered by their insurance, and they have to pay the full cost. Sometimes, the patient is embarrassed enough to not call their doctor and tell them so they do without. There are many options. There may be an equivalent medication in the same class that is on the formulary. Or maybe a generic from another class. Although this is not always possible, the doctors can perform a prior authorization and attempt to obtain coverage for non-formulary medications. However, patients shouldn’t go without the medication they need. These drugs are now prohibitively expensive for many people who don’t have insurance.

Misunderstanding. The patient doesn’t understand why they need to take a medication. No one wants to take medication they don’t need. Many patients don’t understand why they take certain medications. The doctor’s job is to make sure that the patient understands the reason for a particular treatment. The doctor cannot treat a patient if he or she leaves the exam room unassisted.

Myths. There are many myths. We’ve all seen the lawyer ads that say to call them if you take a certain medication. Side effects are a part of every medication. Side effects must be balanced against the potential benefits that the medication might offer. This discussion should take place between the doctor and the patient, and the decision should be made in light of the potential risks. Sometimes, side effects or hearing about them can cause a patient to stop taking the medication. The doctor may not be aware of it until several weeks later. It is important to notify your doctor immediately after you have decided to stop taking a medication. You may have other options. There may be other options available if the medication were as dangerous as the lawyers suggest.

Time. It seems simple to take a pill. Many people forget to swallow the pill because they are too busy. Many medications must be taken with or without food. There are some medications that can’t be taken simultaneously by patients. This can lead to a delicate scheduling balance every day. This is why we need to do this: We should only prescribe one daily medication and not multiple doses whenever possible.

Patients may not follow our instructions and take their medication as prescribed. There are many reasons for this. We do a disservice as health care providers by not giving our patients the right education about why they should take a particular medication and what side effects to expect. Our patients can receive the most effective therapies available. They won’t work unless they are actually used by the patient.
